Thanks to the COVID-19 outbreak, today’s theme (Hygiene) dominates the global discussion. Everywhere we look we find, share and discuss information about the best ways to stay clean and to sanitise our spaces. We are socially distancing like never before as we close our doors to reduce the risk we pose to others 😷🧼
However, ALL safety measures in Europe are targeted purely to protect Europeans – the Hygiene guidance given cannot be applied to refugee camps. The media shows images from all over Europe of those acting to protect their communities, but none share the situation as it is for refugees. Those who are most inherently at risk have been silenced, forgotten, left to fend alone… 👤👤
In our Europe 2020, even a Human Right like Hygiene has a double standard.
Europe Must Act wants to share a testimony our team has been sent from a young male living on Vial Camp in Chios. Before the quarantine measures were put in place, he and his friends volunteered along with an NGO on camp, leading the NGO volunteers so that they could be as efficient as possible in camp cleaning sessions. Now that NGOs cannot go on camp, he still works tirelessly with his community to collect the waste, improve the hygiene and reduce the risk for others… But he feels frustrated and forgotten. Below are his words:

The world should know the condition for all of us who live here, politicians should act to protect all people (not just for the privileged)!
